Who

A trusted Irish pet retailer with plenty of room to grow online.

Mutz Nutz is an established Irish pet retailer with four physical stores and an online shop serving customers across the country.

The business had earned a loyal customer base through its product range and service. Its website was running on an ageing WordPress theme, and organic search was sending around 253 visitors each month.

We saw a strong e-commerce opportunity and four equally useful local-search opportunities. The SEO campaign later became part of a wider digital strategy, including the development of a new Shopify website.

What

A large product catalogue with a very quiet search presence.

The site ranked for 258 keywords, with only 10 appearing in Google's top ten. Over 1,000 products needed better information, and each physical store had local relevance waiting to be used.

  • 01A dated WordPress theme limited the shopping experience and made growth harder to manage.
  • 02Low organic visibility brought in around 253 visitors per month.
  • 03Only 10 first-page keywords left a large amount of product and category demand untouched.
  • 04Thin product information gave customers and search engines very little detail across a catalogue of over 1,000 products.
  • 05Weak internal linking made important products and categories harder to discover.
  • 06Mobile navigation issues added friction for customers browsing a large catalogue on smaller screens.
  • 07Limited metadata and heading optimisation weakened page-level search signals across the store.
  • 08Four underused local opportunities left each store with less map-pack and organic visibility than it deserved.
A large catalogue needs clear paths between products, categories and the wider store.
How

We built one plan for national e-commerce growth and four local markets.

We combined technical fixes, search research, monthly content, scalable product descriptions, local SEO and practical shopping improvements. Every workstream had a clear connection to traffic, store visits or online revenue.

01

Map the demand

Separate local, product, category and advice searches by intent.

02

Fix the foundations

Improve crawling, navigation, metadata, headings and mobile usability.

03

Build useful category content

Turn 44 product categories into stronger search and shopping destinations.

04

Scale product detail

Use an AI-supported process across a catalogue of over 1,000 products.

05

Win locally

Give each store its own optimised profile, content and landing page.

06

Improve the shopping journey

Add clearer navigation, reviews, stock signals and calls to action.

Keyword research gave every page and article a clear reason to exist.
Details

The campaign, milestone by milestone.

Here is how we moved from the initial audit to stronger rankings, easier shopping and higher online revenue. Open any section for the practical detail.

The pet market covers a huge range of searches, so we started by separating them according to intent. A customer looking for “pet shop Tallaght” needs a location page. Someone researching the best dog food for a Golden Retriever needs useful advice and a clear route into the right products.

Our research covered three main areas:

  • Location searches for the four physical stores
  • Product and category searches across food, beds, crates, treats and accessories
  • Informational searches from pet owners researching a purchase

The research became our content map. We produced around 3,000 words of SEO content each month, with a specific page type, audience and commercial route behind every topic.

Search demand mapped by topic, keyword and the page best placed to answer it.

A catalogue of this size needs clear technical routes for shoppers and search crawlers. We worked through the foundations before scaling the content programme.

Breadcrumb navigation

We added breadcrumbs to show the relationship between products, categories and the wider store. They gave shoppers a useful sense of place and strengthened internal linking across the catalogue. Breadcrumbs rarely win awards for excitement. They are still very handy.

Headings and metadata

We improved H1 headings, title tags and meta descriptions across important page types. Hundreds of clearer page-level signals gave Google a much better view of the catalogue.

Mobile navigation

We worked with the client's development team to resolve responsive-menu issues. Customers could move through categories and products more easily on smaller screens, which matters when a shopping session involves several comparisons.

Robots.txt

We reviewed and updated the robots.txt setup so important areas remained accessible to search engines. A well-optimised page still needs a clear route for Google to reach it.

Mega menu

We introduced a new mega menu that brought key categories closer to the surface. Customers reached useful products faster, and the internal-link structure gave priority categories more prominence.

Breadcrumbs connected products, categories and the wider store structure.

Each physical store served its own local audience, so we gave every location a useful search presence of its own.

The local work covered:

  • Accurate information across all four Google Business Profiles
  • Fresh imagery and regular profile content
  • Individual descriptions covering each store's facilities and services
  • Dedicated website pages for Tallaght, Kildare, Limerick and Drogheda
  • On-page targeting for high-intent local pet-shop searches

All four stores began appearing in Google's local map pack, and valuable searches such as “pet shop Tallaght”, “pet shop Kildare”, “pet shops Limerick” and “pet store Drogheda” reached the top three organic positions.

High-intent local searches brought the stores into view.
Important local terms reached the top three organic positions.

We developed useful articles around the questions pet owners were already asking, including how to choose suitable dog food and how to find the right dog crate.

These articles introduced Mutz Nutz earlier in the buying journey and connected readers with relevant categories and products through internal links.

We also wrote and optimised content across 44 product categories. Each category became a stronger destination for broad commercial searches and gave customers clearer guidance before choosing an individual product.

Broader category and advice coverage helped the ranking footprint grow from 258 to over 1,390 keywords.

Writing every product description manually would have swallowed a large share of the available content budget. We designed an AI-supported process that improved catalogue coverage at a practical cost.

The process turned sparse product pages into more useful, search-friendly resources with clearer features, benefits and purchase information. We kept human-written monthly content and detailed optimisation focused on the commercial pages with the greatest strategic value.

That balance let us improve the long tail of the catalogue and keep resources available for technical SEO, category content, articles and local search. The budget got to stretch its legs a little.

An AI-assisted product description with useful features, benefits and buying context.

The extra search traffic needed a shopping experience that gave customers confidence and helped them make decisions quickly.

We added visible star ratings and customer reviews to product pages, made real-time stock information clearer and strengthened calls to action across products and categories.

Each change was fairly simple on its own. Across hundreds of products, the cumulative effect was much more useful: clearer choices, stronger reassurance and an easier route to the checkout.

Clear stock, delivery and payment signals gave shoppers useful reassurance near the add-to-cart button.

We configured Google Analytics 4 and Google Search Console so the campaign had a reliable measurement layer from the start.

We tracked organic traffic, ranking coverage and user behaviour as the technical changes and content work rolled out. The data showed which categories, articles and local pages were gaining traction.

That feedback shaped the next round of priorities. We could expand successful topics, strengthen pages sitting close to page one and keep the campaign focused on commercial outcomes.

The ranking footprint climbed steadily as the work compounded.
Results

More traffic, a much wider ranking footprint and stronger online sales.

After around a year, Mutz Nutz had a very different organic-search presence. The campaign supported national e-commerce sales and helped customers find the nearest physical store.

  • 01Monthly organic traffic grew from 253 visitors to more than 1,000, an increase of approximately 320%.
  • 02Total ranking keywords increased from 258 to more than 1,390.
  • 03The ranking footprint grew by 437.59% across products, categories, advice and location searches.
  • 04Online revenue increased by 116.31% during the campaign.
  • 05All four stores gained visibility in Google's local map pack.
  • 06Important local searches reached the top three organic positions in Tallaght, Kildare, Limerick and Drogheda.

The numbers tell a nicely connected story. Better visibility brought more shoppers into the store, stronger product and category pages helped them choose, and the local work sent nearby customers towards the four physical locations.

Why it worked

Every workstream had a clear job.

A pet retailer with four stores and over 1,000 products comes with plenty of moving parts. We gave each one a role in the wider growth plan.

Research showed us where the demand lived. Technical work made the catalogue easier to navigate. Content expanded the search footprint. Local optimisation connected each store with nearby customers. Product-page improvements helped the extra traffic shop with confidence.

That joined-up approach grew visibility across the whole business, from a dog-food question at home to a pet-shop search around the corner.

  • Keyword researchmapped local, commercial and informational demand.
  • Technical SEOgave shoppers and crawlers clearer routes through the catalogue.
  • Category contentstrengthened 44 important commercial destinations.
  • AI-assisted copyimproved product detail at catalogue scale.
  • Local SEOgave each physical store a stronger presence in its own area.
  • E-commerce UXturned added visibility into a clearer path towards purchase.
Client feedback

Clear results and a client who understood the process.

Conor left us a five-star Google review and said we helped him understand how to maximise the website's performance.

We like that feedback because good SEO should come with a useful explanation. We make the work, the reasoning and the connection to the wider business easy to follow. Fewer mysterious spreadsheets. More productive conversations.
