We built a new Shopify store for a 2,000-product pet retailer in just six weeks.

MutzNutz was selling through an outdated WooCommerce store that was slow, hard to maintain and gave shoppers little reason to trust it. We designed and built its replacement on Shopify, moved over 2,000 products and the full order history across, and protected the rankings with an SEO migration our senior specialists signed off on before launch.

Who

An Irish pet store with customers online and in person.

MutzNutz is a pet store in Ireland. They sell food for all kinds of pets, along with accessories, toys and more, through their online store at mutznutz.ie and their own brick-and-mortar locations.

They first came to us for SEO. While running that campaign we could see the old website holding the business back, so we proposed a move to a more modern platform with a fresh design.

The new Shopify store went live in December 2024. MutzNutz has now been a Doctorank client for 36 months.

What

An outdated store that was holding back sales.

The old WooCommerce site was badly out of date. It still took orders, but it was slow, hard to keep secure and gave visitors very few reasons to trust it.

  • 01Slow pages. The store took too long to load, which hurts both conversions and search visibility.
  • 02No trust elements. Nothing on the site reassured a first-time visitor that this was an established business.
  • 03A low conversion rate. Visitors were arriving, but too few of them were buying.
  • 04An aging theme and plugins. Keeping everything up to date had become difficult.
  • 05A lot of custom HTML. Much of the site was hand-coded, which caused problems with newer plugins.
  • 06Security issues. The outdated setup left the store exposed.
How

Our plan: rebuild on Shopify and carry everything across.

We set a fixed order for the work and held to it. First understand what the business needed, then choose and adapt the right theme, then move the catalog and the order history. The switch itself would only happen once our senior SEO specialists had approved the migration plan.

01

Discovery first

Learn what the business needed and which features were essential before choosing anything.

02

A premium theme as the base

Pick the Shopify theme that best fit those needs and build on it.

03

Design modeled on their brief

Layout, color palette and format adapted from the examples MutzNutz gave us.

04

Migrate the full catalog

Products, images, descriptions and past orders, all moved across.

05

Protect the rankings

A full SEO migration with checks before and after launch.

06

Launch overnight

Switch platforms at night, when traffic was at its lowest.

Details

The work, milestone by milestone.

Below is the detail behind each stage of the project. Open any section to see what we did and why it mattered.

We started with discovery: how MutzNutz runs day to day, what the new store had to do, and which features mattered most to them.

With those requirements written down, we proposed the premium Shopify theme that suited them best and used it as the foundation for the build. Starting from a maintained theme meant far less custom code to look after than the old site carried.

MutzNutz shared examples of stores they liked. We used those as the brief and adapted the theme's layout, color palette and page formats to match.

The old site gave a first-time visitor very little to go on, so trust was part of the design from the start:

  • •An About page that introduces the founder, photo included
  • •A stores page listing each brick-and-mortar location with its hours, phone number and Google Maps directions
  • •A reviews system that collects feedback from real customers

We also gave discounted products a landing page of their own, so current offers are easy to find.

The separate landing page that gathers the discounted products in one place.

The hardest part of the project was the sheer volume. More than 2,000 products had to move across with their images and descriptions, and the store now has 133 collections.

At that scale, one small import error repeats itself across hundreds of products. To prevent that we built a custom CSV file for the import, so each product, image and description landed in Shopify where it belonged.

We also imported all past orders from WooCommerce. MutzNutz kept its full order history and customer contact details, with nothing stranded on the old platform. The team can still look up a past order or reach a returning customer from inside Shopify.

A platform change is one of the riskiest moments for a store's organic traffic, because WooCommerce and Shopify structure their URLs differently. By default WooCommerce serves products under /product/ and categories under /product-category/, while Shopify uses /products/ and /collections/.

That meant the addresses Google already knew were about to change. Without a redirect, each old address would send shoppers and search engines to an error page.

Crawls and redirect mapping

We crawled both sites with Screaming Frog ahead of launch and mapped each old URL to its new equivalent. That produced over 1,175 redirects.

Senior review

The complete migration plan was reviewed by our senior SEO specialists. The switch only went ahead after their final approval.

Checks before and after

We ran pre-migration checks before the switch and post-migration checks right after it, so any problem would be caught early instead of showing up in the rankings weeks later.

Beyond the essentials of payment gateways and inventory, we set up:

  • •A custom booking page for dog grooming, so customers can book an appointment on the same site where they buy their pet food
  • •Subscriptions for recurring orders of pet food
  • •An affiliate program landing page
  • •An AI chatbot that helps shoppers find products

The grooming booking page is the piece we are proudest of. It adds a bookable service to an ecommerce store, which took custom work on top of the theme.

A product page with the subscription option for recurring orders.

A store with no measurement is hard to improve. We connected Google Analytics 4 and Google Search Console, and linked the store to Google Ads.

We also launched an email marketing platform and installed a system for gathering customer reviews.

We made the switch in December 2024, at night, when traffic to the store was at its lowest. That kept the changeover away from the hours when most customers shop, to avoid losing sales.

Once the new store was live, we worked through the post-migration checks from the SEO plan.

Delivered

A modern store, with nothing left behind.

This case study covers the build and the migration, so the scorecard is what went live in December 2024.

  • 01A new Shopify store, designed on a premium theme and adapted to the MutzNutz brand.
  • 02Over 2,000 products migrated with their images and descriptions, across 133 collections.
  • 03All past orders imported from WooCommerce, with customer contact details.
  • 04Over 1,175 redirects pointing old URLs to their new addresses.
  • 05A custom booking page for dog grooming.
  • 06Subscriptions for recurring orders of pet food.
  • 07An affiliate program page and an AI chatbot that helps shoppers find products.
  • 08GA4, Search Console and Google Ads connected, plus an email platform and a reviews system.
Why it worked

The details were settled before launch night.

Moving platforms is risky because so much changes at once: the design, the URLs, the checkout and the data underneath.

We kept that risk down by deciding the details early and working in a fixed order. The theme was chosen after discovery. Both sites were crawled and the redirects mapped before launch. The switch waited for senior approval, and it happened at the quietest time of day.

It also helped that we already ran their SEO, so the people planning the migration were the people responsible for the rankings.

  • Discoverydecided which features and which theme the store needed.
  • Premium themegave the build a modern, maintainable foundation.
  • Custom CSV importkept 2,000+ products, images and descriptions in order.
  • Crawls and redirectscarried the old URLs over to the new ones.
  • Senior reviewmeant nothing launched until the plan was approved.
  • Overnight launchkept the switch away from peak shopping hours.
Client feedback

Three years in, and still working together.

MutzNutz left us a five-star review. It covers working with us as a whole and not the website alone, which fits: the rebuild is one chapter in a partnership that has now run for 36 months.

We aim to be easy to work with on every project. That means regular communication, full transparency on what is being done and why, and a team you can reach.
